For Staff Accountants ·
What you'll accomplish
By the end of this guide, you'll have a ChatGPT conversation workflow set up specifically for audit workpaper documentation — so you can generate professional workpaper narratives, management letter findings, and procedure descriptions in minutes instead of struggling with blank pages.
What you'll need
Go to chatgpt.com and sign in. Start a new chat by clicking the "+" button or "New chat" in the left sidebar.
A note on data privacy: You'll be describing audit procedures in general terms but should never enter client-specific information — no entity names, dollar amounts linked to a specific client, EINs, or information that could identify a client. Describe situations generically: "a non-profit with grant revenue" not the actual organization name.
Start every workpaper session with this setup message:
I am a staff accountant at a CPA firm performing audit and tax work. When I ask you to write workpaper narratives, use professional audit documentation language: past tense, formal tone, specific about procedures performed, conclusion statement at the end. Follow this format: [brief description of procedure] → [what was examined and how] → [results/exceptions] → [conclusion].
What you should see: ChatGPT acknowledges your instructions. Now it's primed for the rest of the conversation.
For each workpaper, give ChatGPT three pieces of information:
Example input:
Write an audit workpaper narrative for cash testing. I performed the following: selected all bank accounts (3 total), agreed ending balances per bank statements to the trial balance as of 12/31/25, reviewed bank reconciliations prepared by client, agreed reconciling items to subsequent clearance. No exceptions found.
Paste your input and hit enter. ChatGPT generates a 2–4 paragraph narrative in standard audit documentation language.
What you should see: Formal language like:
If the narrative is too short, add: "Expand this with more detail about the procedures." If it's too formal: "Make this slightly more plain-language while keeping it professional." If it misses something: "Add a sentence noting that I also reviewed the outstanding check listing for items over 90 days old."
Select all the text, copy, and paste directly into CaseWare, CCH Engagement, or Word. Make any firm-specific adjustments (standard sign-off language, formatting requirements) before submitting for review.
